Are You a Food Addict?

Identifying why you eat and looking at your relationship with food may reveal a deeper problem than just overeating.

For some people, food is more than just sustenance or even the occasional indulgence, but an actual addiction. As part of the Move It and Lose It in 2011 11 week weight loss plan, Dr. Oz is looking at the signs of food addiction. New research has shown that when you splurge and eat sugary, salty or fatty foods, your brain releases a rush of dopamine - just as the brain does when using dangerous drugs. This addiction makes it nearly impossible to lose weight. People who suffer from other addictions have the option to avoid those drugs, but with food there's no real getting away from it. So how can you battle a food addiction?

According to Dr. Oz there is a difference between being overweight and being a food addict. People who are addicted have a very strong emotional connection to food and they truly think about it nearly all the time. Many people who are overweight simply overeat. They aren't obsessed with food and food doesn't preoccupy their mind and their time.

Dr. Oz says there are 5 warning signs that you may be a food addict:
  1. Hiding foods - Many food addicts hide foods in their home, car, or even their workplace. It's a sign that you're feeling shame about food and your eating because you're trying to hide it away.

  2. Thinking about food more than 1 hour a day - If food has become an obsession or something you spend a significant chunk of your day thinking about, then you may be suffering from a food addiction.

  3. Eat after arguing with spouse or friend - When food becomes so closely tied to emotion that you regularly turn to it for comfort, that may be a sign of a serious problem.

  4. You experience withdrawal symptoms - For many addicts, when they are not eating or when they're trying to restrict themselves from food, they may go through physical symptoms like dizziness, a racing heart and even sweating or clamminess, much like the physical withdrawal symptoms of a drug addict.

  5. You can't stop eating even when you're not hungry - When you're an addict, eating may be reflexive. Without even comprehending how much you're eating, you might consume hundreds or thousands of calories in one sitting when you weren't even hungry to begin with.
Dr. Oz says that if you exhibit any 3 of these warning signs, you may be suffering from a food addiction, and suggests tools for breaking your addiction. When you reach for food, ask yourself if you're feeling Frustrated, Lonely, Anxious or Bored (FLAB). If you feel any of the FLAB emotions, and not hunger, then don't eat. Use something other than eating to distract yourself such as going for a walk or writing in your journal.

Another solution is to write down what you're feeling when you're eating as part of a food log. In the food log, track not only what you're eating, but when, where and what you're feeling when you eat the food. Keeping track will not only make you more conscious of what you're eating, but will also help you identify patterns that you can learn to break in the future.
