Friday Fact or Fiction: Fitness Videos Don't Work

Verdict: FICTION

Workout videos made their debut in the 80s with the help of Jane Fonda and the craze has scarcely died down. America still wants to get in shape. America still does not want to go to the gym. So naturally, an at home work out is going to fly off the shelves. Even more convenient is something that goes along with the country's fascination with visual media. It is no surprise that workout videos are one of the most popular ways people choose to get in shape. However, there are still a lot of people who complain that they don't work, leaving newcomers more than skeptical. The question of whether or not something works, just like anything in life can usually be measured by the amount of time it takes to see results. Workout videos do work, for those who stick it out long enough to see results!

do workout videos work?

What many people fail to understand about fitness and health is that it is science. It is not some magical feat that can only be reached by the kind of people that you read about in books. It is a lifelong commitment that anyone can make. Another surprising fact, it's our natural state of being. You are born to be fit! Since most of us have left the state of natural fitness long ago, it is easy to see where discouragement comes in. You must be as consistent in getting fit as you were in getting unhealthy. Consistency yields results.

So what is it about workout videos that has some people raving and some shaking their heads? It's all about the level of commitment in the individual. If you can get through the whole thing, several times a week, you will see results. Consistent nutritional and exercise habits dictate if you see the results of your workouts or not.

By no means are we telling you to go out and buy the full stock of Tae Bo or pilates tapes, but these workout videos are a good idea for getting your exercise in at home. They teach form and many offer great dieting tips as well. The trick is to find one that you like that keeps you coming back for more. There are aerobic videos, strength training videos, dance workouts and more.

Give it a few weeks. Do exactly as they say, and give it your best effort. Then, decide for yourself whether or not it's working for you. Do all exercise videos "work?" Probably not. However, it's not fair to group them all as failures. You've got to find the one that works for you. When you start to see results, it will be because you gave it your all, not because of the video.
