Technique and Technology Work Together For Advanced Sculpting

One physician says that while technology has provided a more accurate tool, it takes artistry and technique to deliver a more beautiful result.

New methods of fat removal and artistic contouring have made true body sculpting a reality. Physicians are now able to remove fat from patients who are generally healthy but have just very small areas of fat that they want removed to reveal their underlying musculature.

The two devices chosen most often for artistic sculpting are Vaser and the SmartLipo Triplex. In Denver, Dr. David Broadway has both of these tools at his disposal for creating beautiful bodies, and the choice depends on what the physician has to work with and what the patient's end goal is.

The SmartLipo Triplex uses laser technology to melt fat before it's removed. The Triplex in particular is different from previous versions of the device, and from all other current laser lipo devices, because it uses three separate wavelengths to affect the fat and stimulate new collagen growth for skin tightening. Dr. Broadway has found that the Triplex helps to make the treatment quicker. "The 1420 wavelength has made the procedure a little bit faster. I'm primarily using it when I'm trying to get a little bit more skin contracture," he says, though he does say that both the Triplex and Vaser are good for skin tightening.

Dr. Broadway also performs fat transfer procedures in which live, viable fat cells are removed from one part of the body to another. Laser lipo devices aren't used for fat transfer because the laser melts the fat, and the cells are no longer alive. The Triplex may deliver fat that can be used for transfer, but it's not currently known for sure. Dr. Broadway says, "I don't use the SmartLipo when planning to do fat transfer because I'm not sure that the fat is viable, though that has yet to be determined." In this case, he uses Vaser instead.

He says that in the end, what matters more than the device is the technique used for this special sculpting. "The instruments allow us to do it a little bit more predictably, a little bit quicker and I think we get better results with the technology, but the procedure itself would be identical with the one exception of fat transfer."

The technique used and the results gained are the reason that even in a tough economy, Dr. Broadway hasn't seen a slow down in patient interest. He says, "When the patients see the results that we have compared to the competitors, they tend to drift our direction. I think that we have an understanding and a different approach to the patient during the consult and they pick up on that as well." He explains to the patient what results they can expect and how he can sculpt in a more artistic manner. "Most surgeons are just simply trying to make them circumferentially smaller. They're trying to take out bulges, but with this, we're actually trying to bring out anatomical detail, musculature and bone."
