Tummy Tuck Renews Joy in Weight Loss Patients

Dropping the pounds is a hard battle, and the excess skin left afterward can feel like a battle wound.

Losing weight is a hard process that pays off in the end because you are healthier and look amazing. But what happens when you lose the weight, and are indeed healthier, but you don't look as amazing as you'd hoped because of loose skin and stretch marks? If you've lost a significant amount of weight, 100 pounds or more, you likely need to turn to a cosmetic surgeon for the answer.

"I wish there was a magic box we could put them into, but this is really it. For this kind of problem, there really is no other solution," says Dr. Johan Brahme of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre in a recent interview with Fox 5 News in San Diego. He spoke about treatments for those who have lost a significant amount of weight that can help them really enjoy what they've accomplished. After shedding the pounds, excess skin and fat remain that are impossible to get rid of without surgery. Biggest Loser winner Danny Cahill lost 239 lbs on the popular NBC show and spoke to The Doctors cast member Dr. Drew Ordon who suggested that Danny have a tummy tuck to remove the excess skin on his stomach.

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of the most common procedures among weight loss champs. The physician will make an incision low on the abdomen so that it can be hidden under a bikini. After the excess skin and fat are removed, the internal ligaments are tightened and firmed. The doctor will try to preserve the original appearance of your belly button, but if that isn't possible due to the stretching of the skin, the doctor can build you a new one.

Another common procedure for weight loss patients is breast lift, also known as mastopexy. In this surgery, the breast tissue is repositioned higher, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is relocated. You will have some scarring, but in the hands of a good surgeon scarring should be minimal, and will be positioned in a way that your bra or swimsuit can hide them.

Both of these surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia and can often be performed at the same time, avoiding the need for multiple recoveries. These surgical solutions don't come cheap though. According to Dr. Brahme, the cost for these two procedures will be in the tens of thousands.
