For those of us who have jobs which call for a lot of traveling, it may be difficult to develop consistency in your diet and exercise habits. 1. First-Class Lunchbox
Eating on the go can get expensive and dicey, as far as finding healthy choices that fit in your diet. Whether you're a frequent traveler by plane or automobile, it is helpful to have a "lunchbox" that has plenty of space and compartments. Having a lunchbox makes it easier to have healthy food options that you've chosen vs. eating what is readily available. Make sure your Tupperware has a place for ice or is insulated for long periods of travel. There are many options available at retailers such as Walmart, The Container Store, drugstores and online - shop around for the best deal.

  2. Written Meal Plan
Having a well-thought-out plan in any situation takes the guess work out of things and gives you more control over your results. When it comes to dieting, the more information and planning you have, the better your outcome will be. Whether you seek the assistance of a nutritionist or use the internet, there is no reason for you not to know nutritional information of basic foods and plan accordingly before traveling.

  3. Learn The Lay Of The Land
Familiarize yourself with the city that you're traveling to. This has never been easier with the help of the internet. Be sure to search for nearby grocery stores and restaurants where you can find healthy food choices. Chances are there will be chain stores that can supply you with the same food that you eat at home. Your hotel room will most likely not have a kitchen but most rooms have refrigerators, so stock up on healthy snacks, deli meat, fruits and pre-packaged salad kits.

  4. Know The Rules of the Plane
In accordance with TSA rules, liquids and many food items which are liquid-like that are over 3.4 oz are not allowed on the plane. This means you should not pack your pantry into your carry-on bag since most airports will confiscate these items at the security check-in point. If you must bring a special food item, put it in your checked bag but we recommend placing it in a plastic bag first in case it breaks during transit.

  5. Backup Plan
Develop a list of absolute "Do Not Eat" foods to avoid in case a meeting is fully furnished with food. Eat within reason with what you're given - most meetings will have high carb and fatty food options but will often have fruit as well. Make sure you have meal replacement shake packets or bars on you at all times. A good rule of thumb to follow is a meal of meat and vegetables is a healthy option if there are no heavy sauces or butter to hike up the caloric value. Also, when in doubt, there are now many smart phone apps available that can accurately determine the nutritional value of foods to help you make the smartest and healthiest decision possible.

Eating healthily is a task at home and when you're traveling, it gets doubly difficult but it is possible. All it takes is solid planning, knowing the options available to you and using all the tools you can to find healthy options. Succumbing to often unhealthy on-the-go food may be easier but having a healthy food plan is ultimately more satisfying.
