A truth that we cannot escape is as we age, skin sags - everywhere. In the same fashion that your face will lose volume and the skin will begin to droop, other parts of your body will succumb to gravity as well. The vaginal area is no different. Even if you've never been pregnant, you may want to consider vaginal rejuvenation if your parts "down there" are starting to show your age.

As recently seen on The Doctors, sagging skin down there is something that many women have concerns about. According to Dr. Lisa, as women age, they lose estrogen, which affects connective tissues and fat in the face and all over the body. This estrogen loss also causes wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of volume in the vaginal area. In some cases, the clitoral hood may pull back, causing the the clitoris look larger and as the vagina begins to dry, it may even close up.
According to Houston vaginal rejuvenation provider Dr. Paul Vitenas, "We have offered vaginal rejuvenation at our practice for the past 25 years but demand has not been mainstream until the past 5 or 6 years. Due to the internet and easy access to information, women have begun to actively search for these procedures. Demand has increased and we've performed more vaginal rejuvenation procedures in the past few years, helping patients feel better about lot of issues that they previously wouldn't have even talked to someone about, let alone seek medical help."
Similar to the face, early detection is key in maintaining a healthy vagina. Dr. Lisa urges women to begin looking at their vaginas and taking preventative measures as they would with their faces. Exfoliation and moisturizing the area are key things to do but "sexercise" is also important to keep the blood flowing and the vagina lubricated.
If you're a little further along and a bit past the prevention stage, there are many options available to restore your sense of femininity:
- Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
If the mons pubis, the fat pad which surrounds the vagina has lost volume, facial fillers such as Sculptra may be injected into the site. Sculptra, which promotes natural collagen growth over time, could help with volume loss. Also, Sculptra may be injected into the labia majora or minora to address sagging skin. - Vaginal Fat Transfer
Similar to the non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation, a fat transfer can restore volume to the mons pubis or labia minora or majora. Using fat from another part of the body, which is typically removed via liposuction, the fat is harvested and then may be used as a natural filler. - Labiaplasty
With the advances made in technology, lasers as well as surgery are options to remove excess skin. A labiaplasty addresses the loose and sagging skin on the labia minora and majora by excision. This may also be performed to correct any asymmetry that exists. "We often have patients that request to decrease the size of the labia majora or labia minora," states Dr. Vitenas, "Usually in women who have not had children, it's the labia minora that they want trimmed, made smaller or correction of asymmetry. - Vaginal Rejuvenation - A Down There Lift
Similar to the intensity of a facelift to rejuvenate the face, a vaginal rejuvenation procedure effectively serves as a "down-there" lift. "Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and in particular, women who have had multiple pregnancies and vaginal delivers, the vaginal canal may become enlarged," says Dr. Vitenas. During this surgical procedure, the vaginal canal is actually tightened and the vaginal opening is made smaller. This may be done in conjunction with any of the above procedures to offer both improvement internally and an aesthetically pleasing external result.
Getting older doesn't mean you have to fall prey to gravity's relentless pull. Anti-aging products and procedures are available to help turn the clock back, for all parts of the body. With all these options, it's up to you and your physician to determine which procedure is right for you!
