deep vein thrombosis on the doctors

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot develops in one of the body's deep veins, most often the leg. The clot may travel from the leg to the lungs, which blocks blood from entering other parts of the body causing trouble breathing and fatigue. These clots can even pass to the heart over time, causing heart failure and death.

The Doctors' own Dr. Travis Stork says that it's important to keep an eye out for blood clot warning signs. He says to look out for a sudden shortness of breath and leg swelling. Other signs include a redness around the affected area, a bloody cough, and chest pains that may mimic a heart attack.

Blood clots are often formed from sitting for long periods of time, like when flying or on an extended road trip. It's a good idea to take a few minutes to get up and walk around to help ensure proper vlood flow in your lower extremities. Also, wearing support hose and drinking plenty of water can also help prevent DVT.

This month is DVT awareness month, so make sure to talk to your doctor about your risk, especially if you spend a lot of time flying. Visit www.preventdvt.org to take their DVT risk assessment quiz.
