Low Budget Healthy Eating Tips with Dr. Oz

Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank. Follow these tips to greater savings on the freshest foods at the grocery store.

  • Make Your Own Frozen Veggies - Buying fresh can be expensive, but if you keep your eyes peeled for the sales you can really make out like a bandit. When you see a veggie that you like on sale, stock up and then you can bring it home, blanch it, and store it in freezer-safe bags.

  • Whole Chicken - Rather than just purchasing chicken breasts or chicken thighs, bring home the whole thing. Rachael suggests poaching it so that the protein packed meat can be used for several dishes over the course of a few days.

  • Buying in Bulk - Rachael points out that many of the foods that you might normally buy in smaller packages can often be found elsewhere in the store in bulk. Beans are a good example of a product you can find frozen or in cans, but you can often find it in bulk for much cheaper.

  • Unit Price - Instead of looking at the larger print ticketed price for an item, focus on the unit price. Whatever the product is, if you look at the unit price you'll get an accurate idea of what the item costs across all of the brands.

Fast food may be tempting because it looks inexpensive and easy. but if you put the time into it, you can save money and eat much healthier - something the whole family can enjoy.
