I Want Smaller Implants, Do I Need a Breast Lift?

If you're considering a switch to smaller breast implants, a breast lift may be in order.

Following breast augmentation sometimes women feel that the implanted breasts were too large, or perhaps years later, after losing weight the breast implants may no longer look proportionate. For those women looking to have smaller implants placed, the question often arises as to whether they need a breast lift once time has caused skin to stretch to fit a larger implant.

Many physicians say that the answer depends on several factors. If skin has stretched too far and is no longer able to retract properly, a breast lift may be in order. During the procedure, also known as mastopexy, the breast tissue is repositioned higher, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is relocated. Some scarring is possible but can be tremendously minimized with the skill of a good plastic surgeon. Mastopexy does leave permanent scars, but the scars should be positioned in a way that your bra or swimsuit can hide them. Some patients lose sensation in their breasts or nipples, although feeling may eventually return.

Another factor is how much smaller you want to go. If you're looking to go just a little bit smaller, you may not need a lift since the skin might be able to retract enough. On the other hand, if you're going much smaller, then a lift could be in order.
