Orlando plastic surgeon Dr. James Matas clarifies what benefits liposuction can have as well as its limitations. Patients often consider liposuction to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat where even exercise and diet don't help.
There are now several liposuction methods available, including ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL), which may offer an improved outcome for qualified patients and tumescent liposuction, the traditional method. He indicates that each method has distinctive benefits and limitations, which individuals should be aware of before developing a treatment plan.
Dr. Matas says that both methods can provide fat reduction in areas such as the neck, upper arms, abdomen, hips, thighs, and back rolls. In addition to removing fatty tissue, he states that liposuction can be utilized to enhance body contour by creating a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette. The main difference between the two procedures is that liposuction utilizes cannula (tube) instruments to mechanically dislodge and remove fat while UAL uses ultrasound energy to break up fat cells. The fat cells will then be removed using a similar cannula technique as traditional liposuction. Liposuction is not for individuals that are extremely overweight.
Liposuction has been performed for many years and is considered safe. Dr. Matas also explained the importance of being well informed before making the decision to go forward with liposuction.
