The FDA has identified breast augmentation as a possible risk factor for a very rare and dangerous form of cancer. The cancer is called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) and according to dailyhealthreport.org is only found in about 3% of adults. Some estimates put the total number of women with implants at 10 million.

It is speculated that the cancer is caused by the scar tissue that the implant creates once it's placed. Both silicone breast implants and saline are affected. There was at one time a scare surrounding the silicone implants but subsequent testing found them to be safe.

The FDA is clear that more research needs to be done but do caution that women who have implants and their doctors watch out for any pain, swelling or asymmetry in the breast
