Using Photodynamic Therapy to Treat Acne (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) provides amazing results for people who suffer from acne.

If life was fair, no one would have acne past their adolescent years. Unfortunately, many women still suffer from acne into their adult years. But never fear, along with at-home treatments such as BlueMD and dermatological procedures such as the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), adult acne can be successfully combated.

As seen today on "The Doctors," Cari suffers from embarrassing acne and additionally, her time in the sun has left her with some skin damage so she contacted San Diego dermatologist, Dr. Tess Mauricio.

Dr. Tess Mauricio treats Cari's acne with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), in this case, the Syneron eMax system. First, a sensitizing cream is applied to the skin and is then activated by a specific light wavelength, which varies depending on the the condition being treated. An active oxygen molecule is created to destroy nearby cells. In Cari's case, the treatment is used to destroy the sebaceous glands. These glands produce oil in the skin and are a key factor to acne. While the PDT clears up active acne, another benefit is it also helps prevent acne from coming back.

Because the eMax system has multiple settings, Dr. Mauricio also treated Cari's sun-damaged skin with the PDT. It has the capability to use either light or radio frequencies to treat the skin so it can be used to treat multiple skin problems.

Immediately after treatment, there is some redness or swelling, but after three treatment sessions, Cari's skin is significantly improved. She will have to keep her skin completely out of the sun for 48 hours following treatment.
