eMatrix Receives Expanded FDA Clearance to Treat Fine Lines and Wrinkles

The FDA has expanded the approval for eMatrix, and now physicians have another tool for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.

eMatrix Sublative Skin Rejuvenation system has become a popular treatment for improving the appearance of facial skin, reducing the appearance of scars, treating textural irregularities and lightening the skin. eMatrix is the first device to use radio frequency (RF) energy only to provide fractional ablation with minimal disruption to the surface of the skin, or epidermis.

This use of RF technology, combined with the technology's intelligent feedback system that allows physicians to measure the energy and impedance, makes the eMatrix system an excellent option for skin rejuvenation. This option has now become even more attractive for many patients, as Syneron Medical Ltd announced on February 22, 2010 that the FDA has expanded the clearance of eMatrix to include the treatment of fine lines and facial wrinkles.

The technology works by using fractionated bi-polar radio frequency (RF) technology called sublative RF. These energy waves can go straight to the dermal layer, with minimal disruption of the outer layer of the epidermis. Since it is disruption to this outer layer of skin that leads to redness and irritation, the use of these special RF waves allows for improved skin resurfacing- and now for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles- with minimal down time.

Dr. Amy Taub, a leading dermatologist in Illinois, led the research effort for the approval of eMatrix as a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Taub reports that "in our clinical study, we have found those patients treated with the eMatrix system received a safe, tolerable and effective improvement in skin texture and reduction of wrinkles. The depth of tissue ablation and coagulation, and the relative proportions of these phenomena were found to be controllable and could be modulated to optimize treatment for variable dermatologic conditions."

As Louis P. Scafuri, the CEO of Syneron Medical, says, this makes eMatrix Sublative skin rejuvenation system a "total skin rejuvenation procedure that is an innovative and efficacious solution that can be optimized to each patient's dermatologic conditions with less post treatment downtime." Scafuri believes that the "expanded application of the eMatrix system further strengthens [their] offering of diverse tools that treat a wide range of conditions at lower capital equipment thresholds."

Dermatologists have responded favorably to the eMatrix system, reporting high levels of patient satisfaction. As Dr. David Goldberg, a board certified dermatologist at the Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York & New Jersey stated, "My patients are increasingly seeking a comprehensive range of skin rejuvenation treatments that offer noticeable results with minimal downtime. With my versatile eMatrix? system I can address this growing demand with beautiful results."
