Radio Frequency Fractional Devices Resurface Skin

Skin resurfacing is available without having to endure laser light therapies.

It's a tough fact of life that skin deteriorates over time. Sun damage, loss of collagen and slower production of skin cells all contribute to the appearance of aging. Sublative rejuvenation devices from Syneron use radio frequency (RF) to resurface the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and sun damage, and it's safe for all skin types.

Unlike traditional laser based resurfacing technologies, sublative rejuvenation uses special radio frequency (RF) waves. Rather than using light to affect the skin, fractional bi-polar radio frequency waves transfer energy to the dermis layer immediately below the surface of the skin. The energy waves pass through the top layer without harming it, and heat the cells below the surface. This differs from other fractional resurfacing technologies which use light to bring about new skin growth. When these energy waves heat the layer of cells below the surface of the skin, the energy creates a wound-healing reaction that results in the production of collagen.

The eMatrix and eMax from Syneron are both sublative rejuvenation devices. The treatment leads to a reduction of wrinkles, scars, skin irregularities, lesions, and/or textural irregularities. Skin may become more elastic, and skin tone will begin to appear more even as new, healthy skin cells are produced.

Syneron also manufactures the CO2RE device which uses light to resurface skin. Dr. Lori Brightman says that the energy used does make a difference in the final result. "When you're comparing all these fractional devices, it's really about the energy that?s being used. Fractional CO2 is actually a vaporization of the tissue. With bipolar radio frequency fractional you're actually just stimulating the tissue." She says that patients using RF fractional or sublative rejuvenation will have a small point of impact on the skin and that collagen will begin grow.

Dr. Brightman says that sublative rejuvenation is good for improving the appearance of wrinkles and repairing skin discoloration. "When a patient comes into my practice and they have irregular pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkling maybe a tiny bit of laxity, I usually will choose the e-Matrix. It's a few treatments very little down time and easy treatment for patient to undergo - and it has a high satisfaction rate. If I'm looking to do something that's maybe a little more aggressive, I want to do a little bit more deeper tightening or have a bit more crepie skin then I would chose something like the CO2RE."

Most patients report minimal pain associated with the treatment. A sunburned feeling, coupled with a warm prickly sensation, may accompany or follow the treatment and is usually calmed by a topical anesthetic or cooling cream. You will typically see results immediately after a treatment, and improvement may continue for up to one year following the initial treatment since the skin may continue to produce collagen long after the initial procedure is completed.

Patients receive a series of three treatments, administered approximately four to six weeks apart, and some also have retreatment approximately one year after the initial rejuvenation to maintain and enhance the results.

"Patients who were previously turned away due to the high probability of complications when treating skin of color with any type of light or laser based aesthetic technologies," said board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Tess Mauricio who offers Matrix in San Diego.. "In my clinical study of Matrix RF, I treated ethnically diverse patients with a variety of skin types and found the treatments produced tremendous results with no adverse effects."

The Matrix RF works by treating the selected skin area via a grid of tiny matrix spots. The surrounding skin acts as a healing reservoir, regenerating and restoring collagen while accelerating the healing process to ensure limited downtime. Post treatment, patients notice a reduction of mild to moderate wrinkles and superficial skin discolorations, as well as a smoother and tighter skin texture.
