FDA-Approved Treatment Available for Treating Underarm Perspiration

FDA-Approved Treatment Available for Treating Underarm PerspirationMiraDry is the latest technology for treating excessive underarm perspiration.

Dr. Cynthia Diehl in Raleigh explains, "It's electromagnetic energy, so it's actually heat energy that's transmitted just below the skin where those glands are and it's very safe because the wand that we use cools the skin and then allows the heat energy to transfer exactly where we need it."

Another bonus is that the treatment also knocks out the hair follicle, resulting in less underarm hair.

The procedure itself takes about half an hour for each armpit, so an hour total in as little as just one treatment. The cost for the first treatment is approximately $2,000 and a second treatment, if desired, is about $1,000.

Dr. Diehl says that's typical for most patients, although those who suffer from true hyperhydrosis, or severe sweating, may require a second treatment. Still, she says it beats the other alternatives on the market.

"Botox, it's very effective but it requires repeat injections every six months or so and it requires a lot of little needle sticks in a fairly sensitive area so some people don't like that. And a surgery, that's obviously invasive, where they are cutting a nerve," she explains.

Meanwhile, this option is pain-free, save for the injection done first to numb the area. And even though you're eliminating the sweat glands under your arms, Dr. Diehl says this doesn't hinder your body's efforts to cool itself down.
