The Trans Umbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA) procedure was developed in Houston, Texas in the early nineties. TUBA was designed as an alternative to placing breast implants through incisions around the areola or beneath the breast. Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Gerald Johnson realized that with an endoscope, he could tunnel just underneath the skin up to the breast area from a small incision hidden in the upper fold of the belly button. A further benefit to the TUBA procedure is that both breast implants can be placed through a single incision. The TUBA procedure is usually performed under IV or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the fold of skin above the belly button so the scar will not be visible. A surgical instrument is used to gently tunnel through the abdominal skin to the level of the breast crease. The implants are placed and carefully sized for symmetry before the endoscope is removed.
