About Testosterone Replacement

As men age, the amount of testosterone naturally occurring in the body declines. This decline starts after age 30 and continues throughout life. Testosterone is the hormone responsible for the proper development of male sexual characteristics, for maintaining muscle bulk, adequate levels of red blood cells, bone growth, sense of well-being and sexual function. Inadequate production of testosterone is not a common cause of erectile dysfunction; although for men experiencing this difficulty, testosterone replacement therapy may help to improve the situation. Testosterone deficiency can be caused by stress, heavy alcohol use, liver damage, side effects of some medications, genetic conditions, or injury or infection to the testicles. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency may include loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction, depression, decreased sense of well-being, and difficulty concentrating. The body may also react to the deficiency with a decrease in muscle mass and an increase in body fat, changes in cholesterol level, a decrease in hemoglobin and possibly mild anemia, fragile bones, and a decrease in body hair. To accurately detect a testosterone deficiency, your doctor will need to measure the amount of testosterone in your blood. Because testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day, several measurements will need to be taken to detect a deficiency. Doctors prefer, if possible, to test levels early in the morning since this is when testosterone levels are at their highest. Like any other medication, directions for administering testosterone should be followed exactly as your doctor orders. If you are unsure or have any questions about testosterone replacement therapy, ask your doctor.
