Dr. Steven R. Cohen is one of the nationís leaders in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Cohen received his surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He went on to complete a fellowship in Craniofacial and Facial Plastic Surgery with Dr. Henry Kawamoto at UCLA. Dr. Cohen specializes in cosmetic and craniofacial surgery and brings a wealth of experience as well as a professional artistic eye to his work.
In 1990, he was recruited to direct the Craniofacial Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he built the infrastructure that is present to this day. In 1993, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta brought him in to help develop the Center for Craniofacial Disorders.
In 1999, Dr. Cohen became the Chief of Craniofacial Surgery and Surgical Director of the Craniofacial Center at Children's Hospital of San Diego and founded FACESplus with Dr. Ralph E. Holmes, former Chairman of Plastic Surgery at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Cohen is very involved in the Plastic Surgical Training program at the University of California, San Diego, where he serves as a Clinical Professor. Dr. Cohen has written over 150 articles for the medical literature and served on the editorial board of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and the Annals of Plastic Surgery. For his work in Craniofacial and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Cohen was named one of the Best Plastic Surgeons in San Diego in 2002, 2003, and 2004, by the San Diego Magazine. Previously, he had been recognized by the Atlanta Journal and Constitution as one of the Best Plastic Surgeons in Atlanta. He was recognized in 2002 and 2003 as one of the nationís Top Doctors and in 2004 by Castle Connolly as one of the Top Doctors in America.
Dr. Cohen is known throughout the world for his contributions to the treatment of children with facial differences. He is the inventor of one of the leading internal distraction systems, the MID system, and placed the first biodegradable distraction device in the world. He is a pioneer in a number of other new surgical techniques developed in conjunction with Macropore Biosurgery, Inc. and Stryker-Leibinger, Inc. He was formerly on the executive boards of the American Society of Craniofacial Surgery, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Cohen is an entrepreneur, having founded the Georgia Alliance of Plastic Surgeons, one of the first managed care specialty networks in the country. He has served as a consultant for a number of biotechnology companies and helped launch Macropore Biosurgery, a local biotechnology company that completed a successful I.P.O. in 2000. He is founder and former CEO of LeonardoMD, Inc., the first on demand, online medical software company. Recently, Dr. Cohen was invited to Washington, D.C. to participate on the President's Business Advisory Council. Dr. Cohen is a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Cohen and his wife are actively involved with a number of charities, including Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, where he serves on the Advisory Board and received the 2004 Founder's Award for his work on children. Dr. Cohen and his wife, Sheri, are also support the Contemporary Museum of Art in La Jolla and are helping to lead a campaign to raise funding for the Center for Neuro-Craniofacial Surgery at Childrenís Hospital of San Diego.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Cohen is a painter and sculptor, whose work is in a number of private collections. He lives in La Jolla with Sheri and their three children, Joshua, Hannah and Kate, and enjoys swimming, biking and the outdoors. He is a regular in the mornings at Pannikin's coffee house.

Local 8 Evening News (April 11,2005) - A taped interview featuring Dr. Cohen aired on the evening news. The interview was regarding the reconsideration of the FDA's previous ban on silicone-gel breast implants.
