Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlargement of the male breast. While enlarged breasts are a normal transient occurrence in about 70% of boys going through puberty, only 1% of adult men experience the condition in varying degrees. It is important that a physician determines if the enlargement is a result of abnormal breast glands or if the problem is an excess amount of fat in the breast area due to weight gain. It is also possible that intense chest workouts can cause breasts to appear more prominent because of increased bulk in the pectoral muscles underneath the breasts. Surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age, but may be discouraged for obese men, or for overweight men who have not first attempted to correct the problem with exercise or weight loss. Men who drink a lot of alcohol or use marijuana are usually not considered good candidates for surgery. Alcohol and marijuana are known to be associated strongly with the condition, as well as current or prior use of anabolic steroids. A good plastic surgeon will require that the patient discontinues use of any of those substances before considering surgery.Request a Consultation
Dr. Timothy Zelko is a Board Certified Physician who has been in practice for 24 years. In the Fall of 2005, he became interested in adding liposuction procedures to his aesthetic practice.
Liposuction has been and still is the most common aesthetic procedure performed in the US, averaging approximately 500,000 procedures per year. Dr. Zelko realized that this huge demand was significantly tempered by the fear of pain, complications and cost of the procedure.
Dr. Zelko’s due diligence led to the discovery of Office Liposuction technologies. These procedures addressed this huge demand while simultaneously delivering a new a level of safety, comfort and acceptability. And even though the anesthetic technology to allow this procedure to be done painlessly in an office setting had been available for the previous 20 years; the liposuction technology was just starting to develop.
Dr. Zelko is a faculty member of The Society of Aesthetics in Medicine and offers monthly courses to physicians in Tumescent Technique and Office Liposuction. He takes great pride in this appointment and feels personally responsible for the success of his students.
He currently devotes all his practice time to the delivery of aesthetic medicine. His years as an obstetrician/gynecologist has allowed him to develop a gentle and empathetic bedside manner, has enabled him to hone his surgical skills and enhance his ability to communicate and educate his patients. All the above translates into an exceptional experience for his current aesthetic patients, both men and women alike.
