Laser Hair Removal vs. Other Hair Removal Methods
Laser hair removal is the most popular method for getting rid of unwanted hair at our medical spa, the Castellano Cosmetic Surgery Center in Tampa, Florida, but that doesn't mean it's the only way. Here's a look at how laser hair removal measures up against other hair removal treatments and methods.
There are a number of short-term solutions available for getting rid of unwanted hair. The most common of these is shaving. Shaving is inarguably the fastest hair removal method, and doesn't require a treatment appointment; you can take care of unwanted hair right at home. The downside of shaving is that, depending on how fast your hair grows back, you might find yourself shaving daily while trying to keep up. Also, while shaving initially seems like the least expensive option for hair removal, the costs of shaving cream and razors definitely add up over the years. Tweezing is another option for short-term hair removal. The results last longer than shaving, because tweezing removes the hair from the root instead of just trimming hair at the skin's surface. The downside of tweezing is that it's simply not practical for larger areas; each hair has to be removed individually by tiny tweezers. Like shaving, tweezing can be taken care of in the privacy of your home.
Waxing is a better option for treating larger areas of hair growth, and offers results that last as long as tweezing by removing hair at the root. A waxing treatment is normally performed at a salon. An aesthetician applies warm, liquid wax to the treatment area, then presses a cloth into the wax and pulls it off quickly; the sticky wax traps the hairs, removing them from the follicle. Waxing can be painful, and also gets expensive very quickly; regular salon appointments are necessary every few weeks to maintain a hair-free look. Hair-removal creams are another choice for removing hair from the root. These can be performed at home as well, and work by breaking down the structure of the hair so it becomes weakened enough to disconnect from the follicle. This option is definitely messy, and some people may find they're sensitive to the smell of the cream, or develop skin irritation from the harsh chemicals.
There are only two long-term solutions for hair removal currently available: electrolysis or laser hair removal. Electrolysis works by inserting a slender metal probe into the hair follicle, then delivering a mild electric charge to the root. This charge kills the follicle, preventing future regrowth. The benefit of electrolysis is that it's permanent; the downside is that the follicles can only be treated individually, making electrolysis time-consuming and painful if treating larger areas.
Laser hair removal, like electrolysis, targets hair growth right at the follicle. However, laser hair removal works by sending concentrated light energy to the root rather than an electric current. The pigment in the hair absorbs this energy, which then destroys the follicle. Laser hair removal is ideal for treating larger areas that include many individual hairs. The treatment will only work during a hair's growth phase, so multiple sessions are necessary for the best results, which is true of electrolysis as well. Laser hair removal is the only removal treatment, either long- or short-term, that can deliver permanent hair reduction to thin out density instead of complete removal, if preferred.
