Erase Wrinkles With BOTOX?

Simple injections of BOTOX into the skin around the eyes and forehead paralyzes underlying muscle and may erase wrinkles... and years.

One of the most popular procedures in aesthetic medicine, due to its ease of use by the physician and effectiveness for the patient are BOTOX injections. It can be said that BOTOX was the first treatment in the aesthetic sphere that made non-invasive facial rejuvenation popular, easy and socially acceptable. While BOTOX isn't the magic eraser for every wrinkle on the face, it can effectively be used on specific types of facial creases - erasing the years along with the wrinkles.

BOTOX is ideal for wrinkles around the eyes, the forehead and between the eyebrows.

Recently seen on The Doctors, the set's very own Dr. Drew Ordon visited plastic surgeon Dr. Ritu Chopra to receive BOTOX on his face and neck - getting a younger yet natural look with just a few injections. Dr. Chopra injected BOTOX around the eyes to address the wrinkles there and also around the lips, where muscles can draw the mouth downwards, giving an aged appearance. In addition, BOTOX was injected into Dr. Ordon's neck to smooth out the appearance of the wrinkles there.

According to cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Burke, who offers BOTOX in Ann Arbor, BOTOX is not only effective, the cost is reasonable for most patients. "As we age, starting in the mid to late 20s, wrinkles around the eyes and between the eyebrows are very revealing. When we consult with our patients about non-surgical facial rejuvenation that will fit into their budgets, we often first suggest neurotoxins such as BOTOX or Dysport." These neurotoxins, as Dr. Burke explains, are ideal for the wrinkles around the eyes, the forehead and between the eyebrows.

The eye has a circular muscle around it. And as we age, the circular muscle contraction around the eye is going to eventually cause crow's feet so BOTOX is ideal in treating that area
- Dr. E. Fred Aguilar

It is also important to note that not all injectables are the same. Unlike other facial fillers that may address volume or wrinkles in other parts of the face, neurotoxins such as BOTOX, Dysport or Xeomin are botulinum toxins which serve to paralyze the muscles beneath the wrinkle. Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Fred Aguilar remarks, "BOTOX works by paralyzing muscles. The eye has a circular muscle around it. And as we age, the circular muscle contraction around the eye is going to eventually cause Crow's Feet so BOTOX is ideal in treating that area."

"More specifically, patients in their late 20s whose facial muscles have experienced a lot more activity will benefit most from BOTOX. Everywhere a facial muscle moves, skin will follow," explains Dr. Aguilar, "Wrinkles in the forehead from repeatedly raising your eyebrows and furrows between your eyebrows from frowning develop from using your muscles."

Dr. Aguilar compares skin to a piece of notebook paper - when folded down the middle, a crease is etched into the skin. However, unlike paper, by injecting BOTOX under the skin, the wrinkle is smoothed out by paralyzing the underlying muscle.

According to Dr. Aguilar, "By paralyzing that muscle, that skin won't move anymore and therefore it's impossible to get an etched line in the skin. That's the reason why we say start early with BOTOX and keep it going."
