Fraxel re:store Dual, the newest fractional resurfacing procedure from Solta Medical may offer patients an option to remove redness and smooth out indented due to acne scarring.

It seems unfortunate that as adults, we still have to suffer from not only acne but acne scarring. Adolescence was hard enough and now we still have to wear the pink or indented scars from acne that happened in some cases, decades ago. These days, the appearance of acne scarring seem to be numbered with new aesthetic procedures using laser therapy, including the Fraxel re:store Dual.

Recently seen on The Doctors, Dr. Ava Shamban visits the set to speak about acne treatment with the Fraxel re:store Dual laser. Also known as the Solta Dual, this laser is the latest to join the Solta Medical family. Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing works by sending miniscule columns of light into the epidermis, intentionally wounding fractions of the skin to promote new collagen growth and skin. As a treatment for acne and pink scarring, fractional resurfacing is ideal since it leaves parts of the skin undamaged, forcing the treated areas to naturally heal itself with new, smoother and fresh skin.

"Fraxel re:store is one of the most effective treatments available for acne scarring and surgical scars," states Austin dermatologist Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis, "Fraxel re:store Dual allows patients to achieve CO2-like results with minimal downtime. Both treatment options are state-of-the-art and set the standard for fractional resurfacing.""

FDA approved for acne and surgical scars, the Fraxel re:store Dual combines deep-penetrating Erbrium fiber laser with the more superficial Thulium fiber laser to offer patients more consistent and successful treatment of acne scars. Depending on the patient's needs or severity of acne scarring, the physician may custom tailor treatment with the deeper penetrating, more superficial or a combination of the two lasers.

Another way that the Fraxel re:store Dual laser differs from other laser fractional resurfacing devices is the physician has more control over the spot size of the columns being sent into the epidermis which is depending on the strength of the laser chosen for treatment. This means the affected skin receives the most energy needed while leaving surrounding tissue untouched and undamaged, therefore decreasing downtime for the patient.

Patients can expect slight discomfort during the procedure which is mitigated largely by a cooling device that is built into the hand-piece. Depending on how large the treatment size, procedure time is approximately 30 minutes. After which, since the Fraxel re:store Dual is a non-ablative laser procedure, downtime may include some redness and swelling for a few days with some flaking but not extensive peeling.

Depending on how severe the acne scarring is, a series of treatments is recommended, ranging between 3 and 6. However, many patients report seeing improvement of acne scarring after the 2nd treatment. Since the treatments are causing the body to heal the intentional wounds inflicted on the skin, results will continue to improve over the next six months as more collagen is regrown.

According to the manufacturer, Fraxel re:store Dual is safe for patients of all color and skin types however, it is always important to extensively discuss laser treatments with your physician if you have darker skin due to post treatment complications such as hyperpigmentation.
