The Best Non-Surgical Facial Enhancement Award was presented to Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera of Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With over 14 years of experience in lasers and aesthetic medicine, board certified dermatologist Dr. Aguilera's specialty is in cosmetic dermatology, particularly anti-aging procedures that are non-surgical and laser treatments to turn the clock back.

"The award winning results for THE Aesthetic Academy's Best Non-Surgical Facial Enhancement Award were for a patient I treated with Sculptra," describes Dr. Aguilera, "I chose to use Sculptra Aesthetics due to it's unique ability to address volume loss from facial fat, volume loss from bone, and thicken the skin with an enourmous amount of collagen re-growth."

According to Dr. Aguilera, Sculptra differs from other facial fillers in aesthetic medicine in that the product is actually a collagen bio-stimulator that addresses most of the changes that will occur in an aging face. In addition, the results of Sculptra are longer lasting than other fillers in the market.

For example, the patient whose Sculptra results earned Dr. Aguilera the award first contacted the Fort Lauderdale dermatologist because she felt her appearance had aged: sunken eyes, droopy upper lids, several unwanted folds around the mouth and generally thin and frail skin.

As Dr. Aguilera explains, 3 main things happen as people begin to age: volume or fat loss, changes in the bones or facial structure and changes to the external skin itself. "Aging starts with fat loss, which in most people starts around age 40 and continues, causing the face to deflate and descend. While this doesn't make people look elderly, it does cause the face to look aged, tired and gaunt," remarks Dr. Aguilera, "Next, depending on how high and thick the cheekbones were originally will determine when bone loss begins it's onset. Last, as we age, collagen production slows down and existing collagen is more prone to breakage and degradation causing skin to appear thin, dehydrated and sag."

Instead of opting for the traditional facelift, Dr. Aguilera chose non-surgical Sculptra to rejuvenate his patient's face because Sculptra addresses all three issues that change with age: fat loss, bone loss and skin. By imitating fat, the face will look fuller and brighter. By imitating bone, the face will look younger and by creating new collagen the skin will be luminous, supple and virtually unable to wrinkle.

The patient was treated in one session with 2 vials of Sculptra, one for each side of the face. Dr. Aguilera performed the treatments with his unique supra-periostium technique, which includes a thicker solution of Sculptra typically used by his colleagues. Final patient results were achieved in 8 weeks.

According to Dr. Aguilera, the patient was thrilled with her Sculptra results and that the non-surgical treatment has increased her confidence. "She feels that her life has changed drastically because she gets so much attention now. She told me that she feels like she got her life back and intends on enjoying life to its fullest now!"
