The vagina, like any other body part, will begin to show signs of aging and as the aesthetic market has exploded with anti-aging procedures for the face, body contouring options for the body, there are now aesthetic gynecological procedures that turn back the clock. Procedures such as laser vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, or even liposculpting "down there" may improve the appearance of the vagina to offer patients increased confidence and sexual gratification.

According to Houston vaginal rejuvenation provider Dr. Paul Vitenas, "We have offered vaginal rejuvenation at our practice for the past 25 years but demand has not been mainstream until the past 5 or 6 years. Due to the internet and easy access to information, women have begun to actively search for these procedures. Demand has increased and we've performed more vaginal rejuvenation procedures in the past few years, helping patients feel better about lot of issues that they previously wouldn't have even talked to someone about, let alone seek medical help."
Younger women who may or may not have had children may seek out a cosmetic gynecological procedure, such as lipo down there simply to improve the appearance of their vagina to increase their confidence and sexual gratification. Dr. David Matlock, the guest board certified plastic surgeon on the show, stresses the point that it's not about just the vagina aging, which may manifest as sagging skin or loss of elasticity but the majority of his vaginal rejuvenation patients are in their 20s-40s.
Designer Vagina procedures may range from minimally invasive to surgical in nature:
- Pubic Liposculpting
For women who have had children, the mons pubis may retain excess fat which may be addressed with pubic liposculpting. During this procedure, a small incision is made in the mons pubis and a laser lipolysis device such as SmartLipo or Vaser Liposelection is used to remove the extra fat over the mons pubis and labia majora, giving the vagina a tighter appearance.
- Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
On the opposite end of the spectrum, for patients that have lost volume in the mons pubis, a facial filler such as Sculptra may be injected to promote natural collagen growth. This may also be injected into the labia majora or minora to add with sagging skin.
- Labiaplasty
A surgical procedure, a labiaplasty addresses uneven or distended labia. "We often have patients that request to decrease the size of the labia majora or labia minora," describes Dr. Vitenas, "Usually in women who have not had children, it's the labia minora that they want trimmed, made smaller or correction of asymmetry. Many of our patients tell us they are uncomfortable with their self esteem and the way they look. We also have patients who tell us they're uncomfortable when they ride a bicycle or when they have sexual intercourse due to the size of their external genitalia."
- Vaginal Rejuvenation
Also a surgical procedure, a Vaginal Rejuvenation addresses the internal structure of the vagina. "Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and in particular, women who have had multiple pregnancies and vaginal delivers, the vaginal canal may become enlarged," says Dr. Vitenas. The vaginal canal is tightened and the opening is made smaller.
It is important to discuss with your physician the risks inherent to any cosmetic procedure before making a decision. However, as Dr. Matlock pointed out, most of his patients find the rewards of vaginal rejuvenation: restored confidence, increased sexual sensation and better external appearance, to outweigh the potential risks.
