As we head into fall, some parts of the country are cooling off but in other parts of the country, we're still experiencing triple digit temperatures. Which can only mean one thing: bikinis and shorts have not been rotated out for fall fashion quite yet. And if such skin baring clothing is still out and about, then we know for sure women are still waging war against cellulite - that stubborn cottage cheese like skin that can appear on the back of legs, on the buttocks or arms. However never fear, there are exercises to aesthetic treatments to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

The newest addition to the hit show The Doctors, fitness guru Jillian Andersen shows audience members 2 exercises that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. The dimpled appearance of cellulite may come from the connective tissue pulling over a layer fat so according to Jillian, strengthening the muscle below the fat may help with the appearance of cellulite. Exercises that may help are lunges and deep squats paired with a jump to thoroughly activate the thigh muscles and gluteus maximus.

If your cellulite is further along and the exercises aren't working, it may be time to seek professional help. Unfortunately, there is no cure for cellulite but there are treatments available that can help reduce it's appearance. And don't worry, you're not alone - it is estimated that approximately 95% of all women have it, even the very thinnest. It is a $12 million dollar industry - ranging from at-home creams, lotions, gels and aesthetic treatments that may be found at your local medical spa.

"We know that cellulite involves multiple layers of the skin, including fat cells that are in an abnormal location in the dermis as well as an irregular arrangement down in the deeper fat layer of the tissue," says renowned New York dermatologist Dr. Neil Sadick. The raised fat then creates depressions and raised skin similar to that of an orange rind.

The following aesthetic treatments typically involve some form or energy and vacuum device to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite:
  • VelaShape is FDA approved for circumferential and cellulite reduction. A combination of radio frequency, negative mechanical pressure and infrared, VelaShape may break down the fat cells in cellulite, resulting in smoother skin. Several treatments are necessary but most patients report seeing improvement immediately. Patients can expect to see continued improvement of cellulite reduction for up to 6 months after the last treatment.

  • SmoothShapes uses massage therapy and suction to address the lymphatics that potentially have more contact with the fatty layer which lies beneath cellulite. The device emits 2 wavelengths that work simultaneously, one works on increasing the permeability of the cell membrane and the other is selectively absorbed by fat cells. Several treatments, 8 is recommended, to see the best results. While patient improvement varies, many see a difference after about 4 sessions or a couple of weeks.

  • The Reaction By Viora also uses radio frequency technology to heat several layers of skin at once. Speculated by many that cellulite not only affects the top layer of skin but several layers of fat, tissue and skin beneath as well, the Reaction by Viora is fully adjustable to treat superficial and deeper levels of skin. Approximately 3-5 treatments are necessary and patients can expect to see continued improvement for 6 months, with a suggested follow up treatment after half a year.
