Plasma: Skin Rejuvenation Alternative to Lasers and CO2

Innovative use of existing PSR technology puts this device back in the facial rejuvenation game with results comparable to ablative resurfacing lasers but without their harsh healing cycle.

For patients who don't want to go through the harsh healing process generally associated with ablative resurfacing, the Portrait Plasma Skin Rejuvenation is an ideal alternative to fractional laser resurfacing or CO2 laser resurfacing. Using plasma energy, the Portrait PSR rejuvenates the skin by using the epidermis as it's own natural wound dressing.

"The Portrait PSR is a totally unique modality," says Las Vegas Portrait PSR provider Dr. Ed Zimmerman who recently presented a session on the device at THE Aesthetic Show, "I've worked with lasers for almost 20 years now - this is a non-laser modality for improving texture, tone and color and tightening of skin." FDA approved for usage all over the body, the Portrait PSR is most often used on the face for facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Zimmerman, who specializes in lasers and liposuction, will be one of the first state accredited facilities that is an office-based surgical center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Having worked with a myriad of state-of-the-art equipment by a number of different companies, Dr. Zimmerman is experienced with many devices. As opposed to many of the ablative lasers, which require more intensive aftercare, recovery from the Portrait PSR is relatively easier.

"The Portrait leaves the skin intact whereas a laser takes it all away," explains Dr. Zimmerman, "Lasers vaporize that top layer of epidermis and goes down into the dermis. There's oozing and redness and most patients are uncomfortable for a long period of time. With the Portrait, you leave the skin intact." The dermis layer that is affected underneath the intact epidermis heals over time and then the epidermis sheds itself.

According to Dr. Zimmerman, "Over the next 3-5 days, a new layer of epidermis is formed. There is a fissure at the dermal-epidermal junction, which depending on the amount of energy used, is deeper as the energy level used goes higher. Patients form a new layer of epidermis. Once that's formed, the top layer of the old skin falls off. The old layer of epidermis acts as a biological bandage which keeps the patient comfortable. When it falls off, the brand new skin is present and rejuvenated."

Another benefit to the Portrait is it's capability to treat to different depths. By adjusting the plasma energy level, physicians can do a light treatment or a full high energy treatment for results similar to a fractional laser treatment. Lighter rejuvenation results require less downtime while deeper treatments yield better results but downtime is longer.

Aftercare post procedure is dependent on how deep of a treatment the patient receives. "After a low energy procedure, we may use something like the Oxygenetix application system, which we can put on their skin immediately after their procedure so that look like they've had nothing done when they leave the office," states Dr. Zimmerman, "For patients who have had mid to deeper treatments, we use a series of balms to help accelerate the healing process but the patient is still looking at a social downtime of at between 3-6 days, days depending on the thickness of the skin and the age of the patient."
