A unique combination of laser therapies and facial fillers to offer patients a non-surgical option to turn back the clock 5-20 years.

Use of lasers in the aesthetic industry continues to thrive as new technology and combinations are being discovered to deliver the best results possible. The continuing trend of patients seeking non-surgical options for their cosmetic needs has pushed the laser industry to new heights and no one can speak more to this point than world-renowned dermatologist and laser specialist, Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick. His revolutionary new procedure, The Ultra Repair, combines several laser treatments including laser skin resurfacing and facial fillers to customize a unique facial rejuvenation procedure per patient.

According to Dr. Fitzpatrick, "The one thing about lasers that makes them so effective is how precise they are. If you try to make one laser do everything, you will not get as good of a result." Now being offered at Dr. Fitzpatrick's practice, Goldman, Butterwick, Fitzpatrick & Groff Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, the Ultra Repair combines several already effectiv laser treatments into one procedure that delivers patient-specific facial rejuvenation.

A nonsurgical alternative to a facelift, the Ultra Repair is any combination of the Fraxel repair, Ultra Pulse CO2 laser, various Alexandrite and YAG lasers and the V-Beam Perfecta to treat fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, and visible blood vessels on the face, neck and chest. "How aggressively I treat patients depends on how badly the sun damage is to their skin and what their concerns are," says Dr. Fitzpatrick.

A week prior to the Ultra Repair procedure, which is performed in one session and takes approximately two and a half hours, patients may be treated with BOTOX or facial fillers such as Perlane, Juvederm or Radiesse to address any loss of volume in the nasal labial folds and the marionette lines.

The first thing Dr. Fitzpatrick treats during the Ultra Repair procedure are pigment issues: dilated capillaries, brown spots or age spots. "We use the V-Beam Perfecta to treat dilated capillaries, which can be very prominent in the cheek and nose area. Next, we use the Alexandrite laser to treat unwanted brown or age spots. Some patients have prominent veins in the temporal area and under the eyes, we treat those with the long pulse Alexandite or long pulse YAG laser."

During the Ultra Repair procedure, Dr. Fitzpatrick uses both the Fraxel re:pair and the Ultra Pulse CO2 laser. Although both lasers are fractional CO2 devices, each delivers a different spot size to provide different results. The Fraxel re:pair has a smaller spot size and reaches deeper in the dermis to promote natural collagen growth whereas the Ultra Pulse CO2 laser has a spot size 10 times larger and is ideal to treat superficial fine lines and wrinkles. "The combination of the Active FX and the Fraxel re:pair gives more significant tightening results," says Dr. Fitzpatrick, "It also provides a better blending of all the different lasers together."

"The neck and chest are very difficult areas to treat; by using the specific lasers, we can get a better result in a much safer manner," Dr. Fitzpatick says regarding treatment of these ancillary areas, "We can't use high density on the neck and chest but they respond tremendously well to fractional CO2 treatments and we can get better results by adding the V-Beam and the Alexandrite laser."

The downtime typically associated with the Ultra Repair is between 7-10 days. The less severe the treatment, the quicker downtime will be. Age also plays a factor, younger patients may be able to function and put makeup on within 5-6 days. Dr. Fitzpatrick says, "Most patients have relatively dramatic improvement by 10 days but full results will not be seen until 3 to 6 months out because that's how long it takes for new collagen to form."

The cost of Ultra Repair ranges between $6,000 and $8,500, depending on whether or not the neck and chest are treated as well but according to Dr. Fitzpatrick, "You can turn back the clock somewhere between 5 and 20 years depending on how severe the skin damage from the sun was."
