In an ongoing study, physicians are looking at the use of botulinum toxin products like Botox Dysport and Xeomin as a treatment for overweight individuals to help them lose weight. The study is very new and only 10 patients have been treated so far.
The gastroenterologist leading the study, Dr. Robynne Chutkan, spoke with The Doctors and shared details about the procedure. Using an endoscope, the physician is able to view the walls of the stomach and inject the botulinum into the walls. This slows down the process of stomach contraction so that food takes longer to digest and patients feel full 50% sooner.
Dr. Chutkan says she likes having this non-surgical option because as a physician who specializes in the digestive system, she says every component has it's place. This procedure avoids many of the complications associated with gastric bypass So far, she says the treatment appears to be safe, but further testing is needed. With Botox being FDA approved for new uses so often lately, perhaps this will be the next use for this versatile medicine.
