CoolSculpting with the Zeltiq device has received FDA clearance for the non-invasive reduction of fat. The procedure works by delivering targeted cold therapy to treatment areas and crystallizing the fat cells which die off and are flushed out of the body by natural processes.
Board certified dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey S. Dover, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, and co-director of SkinCare Physicians says, "While traditional liposuction and laser liposuction are invasive surgical procedures that are designed for fat reduction, CoolSculpting is an exciting new approach that is non-invasive and has shown significant, durable, and reliable results in clinical studies for removing fat without the potential risks and downtime of invasive procedures."
Actual results of Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick and Dr. William Groff of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre
The procedure is simple and requires no needles, pain, or downtime for the patient. On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area. Results are seen as soon as 3 weeks after treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients.
San Diego CoolSculpting provider Dr. William Groff, a board certified dermatologist in La Jolla, CA, showed us the device's hand piece, which is placed on the treatment area and suctions in the skin which is sandwiched between two cold plates. As Dr. Groff demonstrates, "There are two opposing plates and these plates gets very very cold - very close to freezing actually. Imagine all of your fat and skin is sucked up into this device, these two cooling plates bring the temperature down to near freezing for an hour. Now, an hour is a long enough period of time that it will actually destroy the fat cells but it won't harm your skin at all."

Developed at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the CoolSculpting breakthrough is based on extensive scientific research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to extreme cold and are selectively, painlessly, and permanently destroyed. In discussing how CoolSculpting works, Dr. Rox Anderson of the Wellman Center and President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) says, "The fat will crystallize. The best analogy is a stick of butter that has a lot of fat in it. If you leave it out at room temperature for a while, it spreads easily and you can easily butter your toast with it, but when you first get it out of the refrigerator, it's pretty solid. When you look at, let's say the milk in your refrigerator, it doesn't do that. What's going on with a stick of butter is that the fat molecules crystallize, they 'freeze' if you will at a much higher temperature than water does. In your body, fat is by far the richest lipid tissue and it undergoes the same transition."
4 Months Post Treatment, 2 Applications per Flank
La Jolla CoolSculpting provider and renowned dermatologist, Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, says that it is very easy to predict how the fat will be lost and that after the cells die, they are reabsorbed into the body. "You lose that layer of fat cells that's right underneath the surface of the skin. It's a very predictable process, it's good for spot reduction but right underneath the outer layer of the skin, right underneath the dermis there's a layer that will be lost that's about at the most about a half inch in thickness. That layer will be the same no matter how much fat is underneath it, you cannot make it take out more fat if there's a big thick layer. So, sometimes if you have a thick layer you may want to go back after about three of four months and retreat the same spot but in most patients the single treatment works really well."
Comprehensive multi-center clinical studies submitted to the FDA validated that CoolSculpting kills fat cells in the area treated based on histological and ultrasound assessment. The CoolSculpting procedure by ZELTIQ will be available through an elite network of CoolSculpting Centers across the U.S. starting immediately. Consumers are urged to ask for CoolSculpting by name, for there are no comparable non-invasive alternatives. Worldwide, more than 7,000 patients have already been treated.
