A recent study released by The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) shows that after 10 years on top, breast augmentation is no longer the most common cosmetic surgery performed in the US. Lipo has now surpassed the boob job to gain the title of the most common type of plastic surgery, and America won the honor of being tops in the number of procedures performed.
Liposuction makes up nearly 19% of cosmetic surgery procedures in the US with breast augmentation a close second at 17%, then blepharoplasty at 13.5%. The study also looked at non-surgical procedures and listed anti-wrinkle toxin injections such as Botox and Dysport at number one, cornering 32.7% of the market while hyaluronic acid injections like Restylane and Juvederm taking second with just over 20% and laser hair removal takes third.
"The statistics revealed from the ISAPS Global Survey represent the first credible and reliable baseline of information in the field. This is valuable information that will be used by medical professionals and media as an indispensable tool for calculating developments within our specialty and general trends, long before governments or industry have amassed this data," incoming ISAPS president Dr. Jan Poell of Switzerland said in a release.
The rise in liposuction popularity may be due to new techniques and devices which are enabling patients to have the procedure and recover quickly enough that they can return to work in just a few days. Technologies like SmartLipo which uses a laser to melt the fat and Vaser which uses ultrasonic waves to break up fat cells both leave surrounding tissues largely undisturbed and can be performed with only local anesthesia.
