10 Beach Workouts That Offer Hot Results

Where's the best place to get your beach body? The beach of course!

  1. Beach Volleyball - Gather your friends and play a game of beach volleyball. An inexpensive beach volleyball set will only set you back about $20 at the most and playing offers a good all over workout.

  2. Swim! - Swimming is an awesome low-impact way to work your entire body. Make sure not to swim too far from the beach and avoid areas with a significant undertow, even if you're a strong swimmer.

  3. Run in the Surf - Get out in the water until it's just under knee deep and run parallel to the beach, trying to keep yourself at the same depth. The water and sand offer added resistance that will get your muscles burning.

  4. Surfing - If you live in, or are visiting an area that has suitable surf conditions, there is most likely a surf school around that offers lessons on riding waves. Get out there with a board and an instructor and work your shoulders, upper back and core muscles while you learn

  5. Pushups in the Sand - Sand offers a lot of added resistance, and you'll be surprised at how much difficulty it adds to many of your regular workout moves. Pushups can be tough when you're trying to do them with the sand slipping away from under your hands and feet.

  6. Warrior Pose in the Water - Yoga's peaceful, meditative moves can be enhanced with the sound of waves crashing on the beach, so instead of doing your yoga at home, get to the beach for a fun twist!

  7. Paddle Boat - Hit the water in a paddle boat for a twist on your bicycle ride. Many beach resorts offer paddle boat rentals and it can be a great thigh and butt workout for you and your honey if you take out a two-seater.

  8. Snorkeling - Get on your fins, snorkel and mask to take in the underwater sights and work your lower body. Kicking with the fins on offers serious resistance, and it's pretty awesome to look at all the fish and other ocean life.

  9. Beach Frisbee - Running and jumping to catch a Frisbee isn't only for your dog. Go to the beach with a friend and really play. Challenge each other to go farther and jump higher for some serious burn.

  10. Digging in the Sand - Building sand castles isn't just for the kids. Carrying heavy buckets of water logged sand from the water's edge works both your upper and lower body and gets the kids involved in fitness as well.

Before going to the beach, make sure to follow beach safety. Avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day and keep yourself well hydrated. Put on sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from sunburn and dangerous UV rays. If you're not a strong swimmer, avoid the exercises in the water or make sure to go when a lifeguard is on duty.
