Facelifts are an excellent surgical solution to remove wrinkles and take years off your face. People are often frightened away from this procedure because of the possibility of scarring and fears of extensive recovery times. Ann Arbor cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Burke regularly performs facelifts and has developed a procedure with minimal incisions.
"I place small incisions in front and behind the ear," says Dr. Burke. "The incision in front of the ear is hidden in a natural skin fold." The muscles of the face are tightened and then the skin is lifted back to reduce the sagging of the face and greatly reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Dr. Burke performs this procedure under conscious sedation which means that the patient is awake, but completely comfortable for the procedure. "Avoiding general anesthesia also means patients are able to go home the same day."

"Most commonly, patients have a combination of procedures. Blepharoplasty, and CO2 laser resurfacing below the eye are the combination most patients prefer," says Burke. Facelifts do tighten the skin of the face, but the appearance of the eyes is usually not much improved. These separate procedures lift the eyes and refresh the skin.
The ideal candidate is "someone in their early forties who wants to look younger," says Dr. Burke. "However, anyone who is in poor health is not a candidate and anyone who's a smoker should stop." There is some downtime associated with the procedure, "Recovery is one week to ten days and patients wear a bandage for 24 hours following the procedure, then a headband to support the healing." These procedures at Dr. Burke's office typically cost between $4000-$5000.
