Does Zerona Work?

After speaking to several medical spas and physician offices who offer Zerona, and reading some of the available literature, we've learned about how Zerona works and how to make it work better.

There's been a lot of buzz around Zerona lately. Made by Erchonia, Zerona is a laser that is completely non-invasive and works by stimulating the fat cells to the point that they burst, emptying the fat stored inside. The fat is then expelled from the body through the lymphatic system. One course of treatment takes six visits, one every other day for two weeks for forty minutes each. It has been said that patients experience significant inch loss in the treated areas with no discomfort during or after the procedure. But is it true? Does Zerona really work?

According to a controlled study, published in Cosmetic Surgery Times in May of 2009, Zerona has been shown to help people lose an average of 1.08 inches around their waist. The participants went through a two week course of treatment and did not participate in the patient compliance listed below.

Greater results are possible with some patient compliance. Zerona can be a great jump start to the beginning of a lifestyle change towards healthiness if you're willing to go that extra mile.

  • If you follow up with lymphatic massage. The fat released from the opened cell pours into the interstitial or intercellular space between the cells. This fat is then drained from the body through the lymphatic system. Many offices recommend undergoing lymphatic massage after your Zerona treatment to assist in proper fat expulsion, adding to the time commitment.

  • If you take supplements and drink water. Vitamin supplements are recommended in all Zerona programs and are typically included in the cost. While the vitamin mix changes with the different offices, they typically include ingredients such as gingko biloba, L Carnitine, niacin, and fish oil. You should also increase the amount of water you drink to assist in flushing out the fat.

  • If you walk. Many offices recommend taking a brisk walk a few times a day after treatment and regularly. Some also recommend lying flat on your back with your feet elevated above your heart level to help the body process and expel the fat released from the cells.

  • If you watch your calories. Watching your diet is critical to improving Zerona's success. If you continue to eat an unhealthy diet high in calories and fat, you can easily undo the work that the Zerona has done. If however, you truly watch the calorie intake and up your healthy foods, the effects of Zerona are increased with better outcome.

  • If you have proper expectations. Many patients are thrilled at the numbers when they hear about people losing more than 20 inches after their Zerona treatments. While these results are fantastic, when it's broken down the patient may have only lost one or two inches in their waist. The measurements are taken everywhere, the neck, chest, upper abs, at the belly button, lower abs, hips, arms (above and below the elbow), legs, etc. The number you typically hear is the total of all inches lost from the entire body.

Additionally, the Zerona is not as specific as other fat reduction methods. It cannot be directed at a specific fat area, rather the hips and abdomen in general may be treated.
In summary - yes, Zerona works, and can work better, provided the patient is willing to cooperate with all of the steps to intensify the positive effects. For those who are already in generally good shape, cooperating with all of the requirements is not very difficult. For those who don't exercise regularly and aren't in the best of shape to start out with, meeting all of the myriad post-treatment requirements is going to be difficult and the result may not turn out just as you desired.
