Looking Years Younger, Raising a Few Brows

Dr. Brett Kotlus is the first cosmetic surgeon to use a combination of radiofrequency energy and tissue glue to lift the brow for facial rejuvenation. The result is a safer and less-invasive alternative to previous brow-lifting techniques. Cosmetic surgeons are using multiple new medical devices to achieve facial enhancement with fewer risks. Dr. Brett Kotlus, of Allure Medical Spa, presented his new brow-lifting technique on January 15th at the 25th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Cosmetic Surgery in Phoenix, Arizona.

As people age, facial muscles pull their eyebrows downward, producing an angry or tired appearance. Dr. Brett Kotlus, a dual board certified cosmetic surgeon in Shelby Township, Michigan, uses a radiofrequency device named Relaxed Expressions(TM) (Bioform Medical, Inc.) to silence the nerves that signal the downward-pulling brow muscles. Dr. Kotlus says, "Radiofrequency has been used in healthcare for years, this is the first time we have used it for the treatment of wrinkles." In addition, bio-compatible tissue glue, also used in the field of vascular surgery, is used to fixate the brow in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position. The result is a much longer-lasting effect similar to that of a Botox(R) treatment. "I felt like my brow was always heavy, it had such a downward hang that it started to get in the way of my vision. Since having the combination procedure it is like a weight has been lifted. Everything seems much brighter," says Barbara C., a patient at Allure Medical Spa.

"Many of the advances in cosmetic and plastic surgery are derived from advances made in other areas of medicine," explains Dr. Kotlus. "For instance, Botox(R), the most popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S., was developed by an ophthalmologist; and modern methods of liposuction were pioneered by a dermatologist." Minimally invasive procedures and technology- driven solutions have been at the forefront of cosmetic surgery meetings in recent years, and for good reason. Patients seek surgery with less risk and shorter recovery periods, as is often achieved with these newer techniques.

"Using radiofrequency to relax the muscles and the bio-adhesive to lift the brow you can have a perfectly relaxed natural look that restores youthfulness in the upper third of the face," says Dr. Kotlus. "Either of these tools alone will help a patient, but when used together, the results are phenomenal."
